City of Heroes Costume Inspiration and a Chance to Win

I love making and wearing costumes.  I have loved costumes for as long as I can remember and as a teenager I dreamed of opening my own costume store someday.  I’ve always planned to expand my business into creating items for cosplayers and I’m finally making some headway toward that goal.  I’ve already introduced my Straitjacket Hoodies, Tu-Tus, and Freaky Fleece Hats, but I have several more projects in the works.  Today I’m going to talk about my plans to create “real life” pieces from the City of Heroes costume creator.

One thing I loved about the costume creator in City of Heroes was the vast variety and endless combinations.  You weren’t limited to the standard spandex and cape with your underwear on the outside.  And as time went on even more costume pieces were added.  I am especially fond of the Steampunk and Gunslinger packs, and was over the moon when I was finally able to create the vision I had for One Hit Wonder’s costume from the beginning, which included the fishnet stockings and flames pattern on her skirt that I wasn’t able to do when I first started playing the game.

So what’s really great about my idea to attempt to recreate pieces from the City of Heroes costume creator is that not only can City of Heroes players cosplay their characters, but people who never played the game can use the pieces to create their own costumes, or even just wear as everyday clothes!  Check out some of the costumes I made for my characters in this album on my Facebook page.  As you can tell, I enjoyed coming up with new outfits for my character Stacey to wear when she went to the Pocket D to hang out at a Cape Radio show.

To give you a few other ideas of what types of costumes I am planning to be able to make, I went through and created a few “basic” outfits in grayscale.

These are just a few of the pieces I’m going to be working on in the upcoming months.  I’ll mostly be making items I can model myself to begin with, so I’m working off the female model here, but there are plenty of nifty ideas for the guys too.  And of course, if any of these give you ideas for something similar, I am happy to do custom orders.  I’m also working on some ideas for period garb for SCA events, as I’ll be a merchant at Birka in January, so there’ll be another post soon with more details on those designs.

Now, about that chance to win… my IndieGoGo campaign ends on December 30th and as of the writing of this post, I am $210 away from my goal.  So I decided to add a little incentive… if I’m able to reach my goal, I will draw a name and that person will get to choose between a full cosplay outfit, a Rewondered wedding dress, or a $500 gift certificate to my Etsy shop.  And if I’m able to raise at least $1210 in the next three days, I will double all the rewards and pick two winners!  How do you get your name into this drawing?  First, each $5 contributed will get one entry into the drawing (in addition to the perks already outlined in the campaign).  This includes everyone who has already made a contribution.

You will also get an entry for sharing the following image:

If you click on the image, it should take you to the image on Facebook, where you can click Share and post it on your own page/profile.  If you don’t have Facebook, you can share the link to this blog post, but please come back and post the link to your share in the comments here so I can keep track… if I don’t know you shared, I can’t enter you into the drawing!

Unfortunately, I can’t hold the drawing if I don’t reach my goal, so please make a contribution and share as much as possible.  We may only have 3 days left, but we can totally do this!!  Thank you so much for your help in spreading the word! 🙂

Five X Fifty: Day 3 – Pins

I know, I know, I am woefully behind on my daily new products.  Take the brain-deadness after the craft fair last Saturday, add in issues getting any kind of a clear picture of my products, and then the rather sudden onset of winter and the cold chasing me from my freezing studio, and here we are with nearly a week since my last new product post.  Sigh.

But I’ve still been making things!  And I have the pictures for days three, four and five done, so it’s just a matter of getting the listings up on Etsy and making the posts here.  Days six and seven are awaiting their chance in front of the camera, and day eight (which should be today) is sitting by the sewing machine, upset with me that I ran off to run errands this morning rather than finish it.  Or I have a couple other ideas that I might be able to finish up by tomorrow for days eight, nine, and maybe even ten and eleven.  I have no shortage of ideas, but that pesky time thing keeps getting away from me!

So anyway, without further ado, let me get to Day 3, and the new Pins I have made and listed on Etsy.  I actually have six pins I just listed, so you get a bonus one!

I decided to go ahead and put up the backlog of the Halloween themed pins I had, because Halloween should totally be celebrated year around, and these spider and bat pins are just too adorable!

Yay!  I love Halloween.  But alas, as much as it pains me to do so before Thanksgiving is over, I must start thinking about Christmas.  These little snow-covered birdhouse pins are kind of Christmasy…

And last but certainly not least, my favorite, this Silver Master Key… wish I could get more of these charms to make more of these pins, but six is all I have.

I have a bunch more pins available at the craft fairs (and of the two items I sold at the last one, one was a pin).  I’ve been working on a few “make as you wait” items and some display items for custom orders, so hopefully those will help me get a few more sales at the next fair.  I think I also need to talk up my IndieGoGo campaign a bit more.  My gogofactor was up this week, and I thank all of you who have helped to spread the word, and ask that you keep sharing it with as many people as you can.  I’ve moved up to page three of the Fashion campaigns, that’s pretty cool!

Also, don’t forget that the Real World Hero auction ends this Saturday, November 10th, so get over there and bid on the Comic Captions Straitjacket Hoodie and HERO T-shirt that I made especially for Real World Hero!

I’ll keep working on the backlog of new product listings and posts, but it will probably be next week before I get caught up.  You can see a sneak preview though by checking out the Gallery on my IndieGoGo campaign. 🙂

It’s Not Easy Being a Green Five By Five

And it’s not easy working in this heat!  I’ve been chased out of my studio once again, but I did manage to clear a path to the window, so we’ll see about getting that air conditioner installed soon.  For now, I’ll just hug the one in the bedroom and work in there, like I have been.

I think part of today’s heat is being generated by the release of Fox’s Folly, the newest hot fantasy erotica book by my friend Teresa Noelle Roberts.  I just finished reading Lion’s Pride, the first in her Duals and Donovans series (Fox’s Folly is #3, and a prequel to #2 Fox’s Den) and I highly recommend it.  I actually read it in two days, because the first day I had to put it down to get some sleep, or I would have finished it in one!  Don’t forget to leave a comment over on Teresa’s blog by July 18th for your chance to win a copy of Fox’s Folly.  It’s also being featured in The Romance Reviews Sizzling Summer Reads contest until July 21st, so go check that out to win other prizes.

I’m also going to blame some of the heat on my own foxy fiancé (see what I did there?) 🙂  Today is Lorne’s birthday, and the second one I’ve been able to celebrate with him.  We won’t be able to go up to Maine like we did last year, but we’re going to celebrate with our friends this weekend at the Hillsborough Balloon Festival.  Hot air balloons and fireworks… see, it just keeps getting hotter!

So let’s cool things down with one of the “cool” colors: green.  Starting off, of course, with the Green Basically Beaded Faceted Bead Necklace from the set of seven:

This next one is an update of an old design.  Originally I had made it with a silver chain, because I didn’t have any copper chain at the time, but I think it looks much better with copper now.

Copper looks so good with green, and I apparently can’t resist making things in this combination.  So here’s another fun design:

In a similar vein, antique gold also looks great with green, and here’s another Basically Beaded design with a completely different look than the first one, using smaller bicone and seed beads:

I am working on this design in lots of different color combinations.  It’s just so pretty and elegant, I must have it in all the colors!

But let’s get back to the green, this time going back to the silver for accent.  And throwing in a bit of geekery:

So that’s five, but I couldn’t resist throwing in one more, given the title of today’s post.  How about a Straitjacket Hoodie featuring this Kermit the Frog fabric?

I also have a few other green necklaces already posted:

Five By Five Remarking Embrace Your Geekness Day

Remark (verb)

  • to say casually, as in making a comment
  • to note; perceive; observe

Today I am commenting on and observing Embrace Your Geekness Day.  Of course, I embrace my geekness every day of the year, but I guess July 13th is a day to especially geek out.  So how about some products to really show off your geekness and let that geek flag fly?

I’ll start things off with one of my most popular geeky designs, a Mini Cthulhu Necklace:

Mini Cthulhu Octopus Charm and Beaded Necklace - Your Choice of Colors - D225N-00823

Mini Cthulhu Octopus Charm and Beaded Necklace – Your Choice of Colors – D225N-00823

It currently is available in red, blue, and pink, but I can really make it in any color I can find the right beads for, so you can get one in your favorite color!  Just set it up through a custom order of this design style.

Another one of my most popular geeky designs is my Steampunk Style Silver Gears and Wrenches Robot Clockwork Necklace so I decided to offer earrings to match:

Steampunk Style Silver Gears and Wrenches Robot Clockwork Earrings D225E-00001

I also have a lot of necklace designs that would look great with a steampunk dress, such as Purple and Copper Locks, Metallic Blue and Copper Stars, Cream and Brown with Copper Flowers, Large Apple Green Beads with Copper Bead Caps, Turquoise and Copper, Upcycled Distressed Pearls and Copper, Clear and Copper Swan, and Green and Copper Stars.  Plus many more I’ll be adding soon™!

One of the things many geeks are into, myself included, is tabletop role-playing games, like Dungeons and Dragons.  So of course I had to put up a dragon necklace!

Large Silver Dragon Simple Charm Necklace on Silver Chain D225N-00904

There’s also a gold dragon necklace design already up in the shop, and I wear my Blue Eyes and Silver Bow and Arrow necklace when I play my archer character in Earthdawn.  What kind of custom necklace could I make for your character?

If you’re going to play a tabletop RPG, you’re going to need dice.  And if you’re like me, those dice are going to go flying!  And thus the inspiration for this piece:

Rainbow Flying Dice Beaded Charm Bracelet for Gamer Girls D225B-00001

Rainbow Flying Dice Beaded Charm Bracelet for Gamer Girls D225B-00001

I have dice necklaces as well, in your choice of colors, rainbow, black and white, and red mini dice.  So far I’ve only been able to find six-sided dice beads, but if I ever find polyhedral dice beads, I’m buying them in bulk!  I’ll probably just have to buy polyhedral dice and drill holes in them.

And now, what better way to “embrace” your geekness than with a Straitjacket Hoodie?  😛

Embrace Your Geekness Marvel Comics Straitjacket Hoodie - Made to Order

Another of my geeky loves is comic books and superheroes, so I snatched up this fabric to use for a Straitjacket Hoodie.  I have several other geeky fabrics that I could use to customize a straitjacket hoodie for you, such as white dragons on black, black dragons on grey, sock monkeys, skeleton keys, love tattoo hearts, Kermit the frog, and even rainbows and unicorns.  And I’m happy to go looking for just the right fabric if I don’t have it already in stock.

I have a lot more geeky items to list, but here’s a few more that are already in my Etsy shop, so go check them out:

Okay, I think I’ve completely embraced my geekness over geeky designs today, don’t you?  And don’t forget, you can get 25% off your order using the coupon code RCIJ25 when you check out of my Etsy shop!

Now, maybe I should take a break and go play some Diablo 3…
