Looks like hockey was the popular theme again, with rainbows coming up second.

I need to get some new items added, I have TONS but haven’t had the time… but I have some plans for that, so stay tuned! 🙂

City of Heroes Costume Inspiration and a Chance to Win

I love making and wearing costumes.  I have loved costumes for as long as I can remember and as a teenager I dreamed of opening my own costume store someday.  I’ve always planned to expand my business into creating items for cosplayers and I’m finally making some headway toward that goal.  I’ve already introduced my Straitjacket Hoodies, Tu-Tus, and Freaky Fleece Hats, but I have several more projects in the works.  Today I’m going to talk about my plans to create “real life” pieces from the City of Heroes costume creator.

One thing I loved about the costume creator in City of Heroes was the vast variety and endless combinations.  You weren’t limited to the standard spandex and cape with your underwear on the outside.  And as time went on even more costume pieces were added.  I am especially fond of the Steampunk and Gunslinger packs, and was over the moon when I was finally able to create the vision I had for One Hit Wonder’s costume from the beginning, which included the fishnet stockings and flames pattern on her skirt that I wasn’t able to do when I first started playing the game.

So what’s really great about my idea to attempt to recreate pieces from the City of Heroes costume creator is that not only can City of Heroes players cosplay their characters, but people who never played the game can use the pieces to create their own costumes, or even just wear as everyday clothes!  Check out some of the costumes I made for my characters in this album on my Facebook page.  As you can tell, I enjoyed coming up with new outfits for my character Stacey to wear when she went to the Pocket D to hang out at a Cape Radio show.

To give you a few other ideas of what types of costumes I am planning to be able to make, I went through and created a few “basic” outfits in grayscale.

These are just a few of the pieces I’m going to be working on in the upcoming months.  I’ll mostly be making items I can model myself to begin with, so I’m working off the female model here, but there are plenty of nifty ideas for the guys too.  And of course, if any of these give you ideas for something similar, I am happy to do custom orders.  I’m also working on some ideas for period garb for SCA events, as I’ll be a merchant at Birka in January, so there’ll be another post soon with more details on those designs.

Now, about that chance to win… my IndieGoGo campaign ends on December 30th and as of the writing of this post, I am $210 away from my goal.  So I decided to add a little incentive… if I’m able to reach my goal, I will draw a name and that person will get to choose between a full cosplay outfit, a Rewondered wedding dress, or a $500 gift certificate to my Etsy shop.  And if I’m able to raise at least $1210 in the next three days, I will double all the rewards and pick two winners!  How do you get your name into this drawing?  First, each $5 contributed will get one entry into the drawing (in addition to the perks already outlined in the campaign).  This includes everyone who has already made a contribution.

You will also get an entry for sharing the following image:

If you click on the image, it should take you to the image on Facebook, where you can click Share and post it on your own page/profile.  If you don’t have Facebook, you can share the link to this blog post, but please come back and post the link to your share in the comments here so I can keep track… if I don’t know you shared, I can’t enter you into the drawing!

Unfortunately, I can’t hold the drawing if I don’t reach my goal, so please make a contribution and share as much as possible.  We may only have 3 days left, but we can totally do this!!  Thank you so much for your help in spreading the word! 🙂

Five X Fifty: Day 12 – Tu-Tus

And now for something completely different…

I made a multi-color tu-tu petticoat to wear underneath my wedding dress, and I’ve been meaning to offer them in my Etsy shop.  Finally got around to making enough samples to do so!  They are available in three sizes: Mini, Regular, and Long, but can also be made to any length via a custom order.  But three is not five, and this is a Five X Fifty, so I made five different color combinations with two samples for each size, repeating the Rainbow combination for both the Mini and Long sizes because hey, rainbows!

And here’s a close up of the Long one I wore underneath my wedding dress:

Yes, I wore Converse under my wedding dress.  Outdoor wedding, uneven ground, standing in one spot for awhile… not an occasion where I wanted to wear heels!  And just because this is MY blog, how about another gratuitous wedding pic of me and my handsome husband?

*

Okay, now back to business!  A Mini Tu-Tu Tulle Skirt can be chosen as your free item for a $20 contribution to my IndieGoGo campaign, a Regular one can be chosen for a $30 contribution, and if you want a Long one, you might as well spend the extra $10 and go with the $50 contribution and use that $210 gift certificate, leaving you $170.05 still to spend.  So for $50 you could get 5 Long Tu-Tus and still have money left over!

And my apologies for getting the post out so much later than I had wanted… I took the wrong exit, then went the wrong direction, and in the process of turning around managed to completely lose my sense of direction so I ended up going the wrong way AGAIN!  I finally got on the right road going the right way, only to realize as I passed another exit that I probably should have gone that way instead, so I drove through town rather than going around on the highway.  Then I drove right past my destination, so I had to turn around yet again!  As I left there, I realized I should probably stop at that store that was in that same complex, so I ended up going out one exit and back in again the next.  I was doing better for awhile, but on the way home I drove right past the exit I should have taken, so I had to go up to the next one and back around again.  *sigh*  It’s been a “going around in circles” kind of day.

But tomorrow is a new day!  What surprises do you think it has in store for us?

Five X Fifty: Wondiosyncra-Tees

You’ve already had a preview of this item, since I donated one to the Real World Hero charity auction (and you’ll see that one again below).  I call these “Wondiosyncra-Tees: Upcycled T-shirts celebrating the characteristics that make you wonderful.”  You choose the word or phrase (ten letters or less) that best describes you, and I cut those letters out of old t-shirts and create a frankentee with a ransom letter style.  I think they’re a lot of fun!

This is another custom made item, so all the links go to one listing in my Etsy shop.  But of course I have five examples for you, two of which someone can snap up as is instead of waiting for a custom made one.  First come, first served, though I can always create another one with the same word or phrase.  It will just look different, since no two of these shirts will ever be alike.

But first, the three you can’t have. 😛

I made one of these for myself to wear to craft fairs and events, so of course it says “Rewondered” on it.  I’m usually wearing a hoodie over it though, so you can only actually see the “wonder” part. 😛

I made one for my husband to wear to the shows he helps me with, too.  His nickname is “Random” and this style is perfect with it’s mish-mash of letters and colors.

And of course, there’s the one I made for the Real World Hero charity auction, which says “Hero” on it. Congratulations to the winner! I mailed it out this morning. 🙂

I wanted to add another color into the mix, so I made up this “Red Hot” one. It’s a size XL, and available to the first person who orders and claims it!

I meant to have more items up today, but I decided that the contributions I’ve received to my IndieGoGo campaign so far should be put to good use and I should take advantage of the really awesome sale that JoAnn Fabrics was having today. I picked up a ton of stuff on clearance, too! I was showing my husband my “loot” and telling him the ideas I was going to make with my purchases, and he mostly just smiled indulgently at me and nodded, with an occasional “ooh nifty!” I have him well-trained! 😛

Unfortunately, I won’t be able to take advantage of any Black Friday or weekend sales, since I’ll be at the Cornucopia Craft Fair selling my own stuff.  Though if sales/contributions and time allows, I may try and sneak in on Saturday and get the Dritz Dressform that will be on sale for $99.99, which would be immensely helpful for creating custom clothing.  We shall see.

For now, I am going to continue to be in MAKE ALL THE THINGS mode until Thanksgiving, and I’m seriously contemplating not taking the holiday off and spending it sewing instead.  I know, I know, all work and no play and all that.  But I’m 3000 miles away from my family, and my husband’s family is 1500 miles away.  We’ve been invited to dinner with our housemate’s family, but being away from my studio all day, knowing I have to be up at 5 or 6am the next day for a 3-day show that anticipates 5000 people coming through… eep!  Again, we shall see.  I suppose it really depends on what all I get done by Wednesday.  So I better get back to it, methinks! 🙂

Five By Five: Post Back Earrings – Day 2 of 50 New Products In 50 Days

It’s Day 2 of my 50 New Products in 50 Days for ReBloPoMo+ and today’s item is Post Back Earrings.

As a Punk/Rock Fairy Princess, I have an affinity for anything with skulls, and silver is one of my favorite colors (but you might have figured that out based on the colors I chose for my business), so when I found these skull charms, I had to get them and make them into some awesome chunky post back earrings.

Yay!  Day 2 complete, and well before the 5pm deadline!  Now if I can just get all the other stuff done that I need to do to get ready for the craft fair tomorrow.  If you’re anywhere near Weare, New Hampshire and looking for some fun holiday gifts, come check out Rewondered at the John Stark Regional High School 5th Annual Arts and Crafts Market.

In other news, I’m up to $100 in contributions for my IndieGoGo campaign!  That means I’m eligible for the drawing IndieGoGo will be doing, and I could be one of five lucky campaigns to get $500 in matching funds.  Cross your fingers for me!  And don’t forget to go make your own contribution.  I’ll be sending out gift certificates to those who have contributed starting on Monday, but if you’re going to come to Weare, let me know and I’ll have it ready for you to spend at the show if you want.  If you see something in my Etsy shop that you want to claim for your free item, let me know and I’ll set it aside for you.

Also, the items for the Real World Hero auction are up!  I donated two items this year: a custom straitjacket hoodie and a custom t-shirt.  You can go over to http://www.realworldhero.com to bid, but I’ll share a few pics here too.

The Straitjacket Hoodie is black with comic book style captions like “Super!” and “Pow!!”

The t-shirt is an example of my new line of Wondiosyncra-Tees: upcycled t-shirts celebrating your wonderful characteristics.  These are made from the letters off old t-shirts and patched together to form descriptive words, and I am happy to do custom orders with any word up to 10 letters.  Look for more of these in an upcoming Five By Five.  For the Real World Hero auction, I decided to make on that says “HERO” on it.

Okay, time for me to get back to work.  Tomorrow’s Five By Five will feature Pins, but may be either very early or very late, since I’ll be preoccupied with the craft fair from at least 6am (getting ready) to 4pm (it ends at 2pm but then I have to pack up, get home, unload my car, have a drink…) or later.  I’m hoping to get it set up tonight but you might just end up getting two posts on Sunday!

Rewondered: Before and After – Prom Dress To Wedding Dress

The Rewondered: Before and After series will feature some of my favorite transformations in rewondering.  I’ll show you what I started with, tell you what I did to rewonder the item, then show you the finished piece.  We’re starting with my wedding dress.

I picked up this silver prom dress at Goodwill for $5.  It didn’t look very exciting on the hanger, and I figured I’d use it for the fabric or something.

It’s not easy to see in the pic, but I like the gathering on the back around the zipper.  I decided to try the dress on and was amazed at how well it fit me, and I began to envision what I could do to it to turn it into my dream dress.  I had originally planned to do separate pieces: a corset top, layered skirts, a shrug to cover my shoulders, etc.  I (badly) drew my idea in a notebook while I was in Florida last March:

Wedding Dress Design Idea

Wedding Dress Design Idea

So with a little tweaking of my design I got to work on a lot of tweaking of the dress.  First, I fixed the halter strap, which was missing a hook and eye to keep it together at the back of my neck.  Next, I sewed elastic under the front seams of the skirt, causing it to gather.  It didn’t end up as short as I wanted, so I tacked the edges of the hem up at the waist underneath, forming more of a bubble skirt.  I decided to leave the back as is, but the front needed something, so I took eye pins from my jewelry supply stash and made hooks that I hand sewed to the bodice along the front seams, then threaded a dark grey ribbon through them, corset style.  I found this adorable white tulle with silver stars on it and made “sleeves” instead of the originally planned shrug.  I ended up with this:

Add the multi-color tutu petticoat I made earlier underneath, and this is what it looks like on me (without my hair done or any makeup on… I’m a great model, huh?)

AFTER - Me Wearing My Wedding Dress

AFTER – Me Wearing My Wedding Dress

I still need to do a few more tweaks to it.  A couple of the hooks came off (as you can tell in the picture if you look closely) so I need to fix those and rethread the ribbon, and work on the sleeves a bit.  I’m thinking about removing some of the tulle or making a new petticoat that is a little less full.  All in all, I’m pretty pleased with how it turned out.  Also, for any of you superstitious folks that are going to freak out about Lorne seeing my dress before the wedding if he reads this blog (which he does), it’s far too late, as he’s the one who took the pictures.  We don’t believe in any of those superstitions, and we already feel like we’re married, we’re just making it all legal and sharing the day with our friends and family.  Besides, if he took a picture of me doing “I’m a Little Teapot” while wearing this dress, and I post it on the internet, it must be love, right? 🙂

Restraint

So what is this nifty new item that I saved for last, the fiftieth of my 50 new products in 50 days?

The title is a good hint, but first, let me tell you a little bit about The Cape Radio.  For those unfamiliar, it’s a small internet radio station that caters to players of City of Heroes on the Virtue server.  I’ve been a DJ off and on for nearly eight years, and I’ve seen a lot of players come and go.  I’m constantly amazed by the community we have and I’m happy to have remained friends with several people even after they stopped playing the game.  What makes us such a great community and awesome friends?  Well, we all seem to have at least one thing in common.  We’re all crazy. 😛

I don’t even remember how it started, but when someone new joins the global channel, I greet them with “Welcome to the asylum!  What color/pattern would you like your straitjacket?”  If I’m not there, they’re told to see Wondie for their straitjacket.  We can get any color or pattern we want and people are pretty creative.  I’ve always said mine has flames on it, since my main character and DJ persona, One Hit Wonder, is a fire blaster.

Which inspired me to create the Straitjacket Hoodie.

Straitjacket Hoodie - Front

The straps on the sleeves can be buckled into the bottom row on the back.  The rest are just decorative.  Obviously this isn’t meant to really restrain anyone, it’s just for fun, and is otherwise a functional hoodie.  And of course I can make them in any color or pattern combination.

Want one of your own?  Make a $50 contribution to my IndieGoGo campaign by 11:59pm Pacific time June 29th (that’s in about 9 hours!).  After that, we’ll talk… just lie down on this couch over here…

The Final Countdown – 3…

Three days left in my IndieGoGo campaign!  Since yesterday’s video said the arrangement was from the Laibach version, I had to go find the Laibach version for comparison.  What do you think?

Three days left, and I have three new products for you!  First up is another Rewondered skirt.  I took a plain skirt that was too small and added a plaid panel to the front.  I have more of the plaid fabric, so I’m planning to make a matching top.

Rewondered Panel Skirt

Rewondered Panel Skirt

Next we have a new bracelet design featuring charms and beads.  This one has a music/rock ‘n’ roll theme and my favorite colors of red, silver, and black.  It’s available as one of the choices for the $20 Recreate perk!

Rock N Roll Bead and Charm Bracelet

Rock N Roll Bead and Charm Bracelet

And now something for the wedding… bride and groom champagne glasses.  I made charms that say “bride” and “groom” and added a frog charm to his and a mouse charm to mine.  The frog and mouse are nicknames of ours and refers to the song Froggy Went A-Courtin’Here’s a version by Suzy Bogguss.

Bride and Groom Champagne Glasses

Speaking of the wedding, I’ve been trying to figure out a hotel for my out of town guests.  There are concerts going on nearby that weekend, and all the hotels closest to the wedding site are booked up.  I’m looking at ones that are a 15-25 minute drive and it’s so hard to decide on one when the online reviews seem to go from “bug-infested hovel” to “this placed is awesome!”  Which is it?  I’m afraid to trust the good reviews in case my guests get there and experience the bad ones.  I may just have to roll a die and trust the powers of chance.

And to add to my hair-pulling, my desktop computer decided to go belly up last night, which isn’t as big as a deal as it could be except for one thing: the wedding invitation.  I didn’t back that up to my laptop because I don’t have Publisher on it.  I’m tempted to just forget invites and send everyone the code for the wedsite instead.  Or perhaps postcard invites with “You’re invited! Go to the wedsite for more info!”  That’s what I get for procrastinating on sending them, I guess.  *sigh*

On a brighter note, my IndieGoGo campaign is doing well, and I’m up to $210 in contributions, with just $290 left to reach my goal!  I’m hoping for more last minute contributions, which will help me get to Columbus to get some of my supplies out of storage, and get more items up in my Etsy shop and online store.  All contributions will go directly into the business and be split among phases one and two as best I can, as those are the most imperative right now.  I will update by the end of July with an exact accounting of how I spent/will spend every penny contributed, so you’ll know exactly what I did with the money.  And I’ll continue to update this blog with new products and how the money is helping Rewondered.

Thanks again for your contributions and help spreading the word about my IndieGoGo campaign!  You all rock!

Regeneration

Regenerate – to re-create, reconstitute, or make over, especially in a better form or condition.

Yep, that’s my thing, that’s what I do.  I take things that are generally unwanted or unusable in their present condition, and re-create them into something wonderful.  I love taking something plain and boring and making it interesting and fun.  I love taking something broken and giving it new life.  That’s the whole premise behind Rewondered, and a lot of what I’m trying to do with some of the new products I’ve been introducing.

As I mentioned on Sunday, I’m going to start posting three items at a time as I get them completed and photographed, though I do have a few items that I think deserve a post all by themselves.  You’ll see what I mean when I get them posted.  But today I’m posting three.

First up is an item for our wedding.  Lorne often jokes about getting some popcorn whenever our friends are getting lovey-dovey, so I asked if we could borrow a popcorn machine for the wedding, to give people something to snack on before and during the ceremony.  I stole a line from Lorne, “Ah, Love. I can watch it for hours.” and put that on the labels of these cute little cups.  They’re a little small, so people will probably have to get refills, but there will be lots of food at the reception so they won’t want to fill up on popcorn too much anyway.

I made another pillow from a shirt, this time a dress shirt that I loved, but the material was just a little too “weird” for wearing.  Not really uncomfortable or scratchy, but a little clingy and just didn’t feel right on my skin all day.  But it works great as a pillow!

And finally, I’ve been working on some ideas for rewondering hoodies.  I love hoodies and have quite a few, but you wouldn’t really expect me to wear something plain and boring, would you?  So I’m dressing them up a bit.  This one uses a reverse applique technique.  I cut out star shapes on the front and back and sewed a piece of red fabric with white stars to the back side of the hoodie so it would show through the star shape.  I figured I’d do this particular design in Rewondered’s red and grey colors, since the star is my symbol.  I might have to see about adding my logo to the other side.

And that’s going to do it for this post.  I’ll have more for you later, as I’m continuing to finish up all these half-started projects.  The next two weeks will be kind of hectic, with school starting up again yesterday, my IndieGoGo campaign coming to an end on the 29th, getting invitations to the wedding out, figuring out hotels and other travel arrangements for our guests that are coming from other states, and deciding if I want to pursue two other possible opportunities I’ve found that have deadlines of June 30th.  One is a very nice grant for my business, but would require 250 likes on Facebook and answers to some essay questions.  The other is an “audition” for a design team which would require me to make four items using a particular company’s products.  Because really, I don’t have enough on my plate, right?  😛

Monday Musings: Back To Work

It’s Monday!  I know most people hate Mondays, and most Mondays tend to hate people back.  But I think most of my friends would describe me as a bit of a Pollyanna, an optimist who always looks on the bright side of life.  So I don’t subscribe to the “Mondays Suck” newsletter.

Don’t get me wrong, I really didn’t want my weekend to end.  I don’t take a lot of weekends completely off (and admittedly, I did some posting about my IndieGoGo campaign this weekend, so I guess I didn’t take this one completely off).  But I thoroughly enjoyed just hanging out with Lorne and playing Diablo 3 and petting the cats we were taking care of for the weekend.  It was a great weekend without much more to do other than making sure our friends didn’t have to worry about cleaning the litter boxes or having clean sheets and towels when they got home from their vacation.  We thought about putting mints on their pillows but it was kind of warm and coming home to melted chocolate in their bed would have totally ruined the effect. 😛

So here it is Monday and I’m happily puttering away in my studio.  I really enjoy what I do, taking something “useless” and making it wonderful.  That’s another aspect of my Pollyanna personality, I see potential and inspiration where other people see junk.  I took a torn t-shirt that was way too big for my anyway, and created a cute summer top by cutting off the sleeves and tying up the back and sides.

I took a pair of men’s pants and some scrap fabric and lace and made a skirt.

I took a plaid jumper and made a bag out of the top.

And I took two skirts, one denim and one velvet, that were way too small for me and made a new, two-tone skirt.

This is what I love doing, this is what I want to do for the rest of my life, this is how I want to make a living.  And this is why I’m pushing my IndieGoGo campaign.  Because in order to be successful, I need the money to implement my plans.  The blood, sweat, and tears I continuously pour into this business will only take me so far, unfortunately.  As the saying goes, you need money to make money.  Thank you for spreading the word about the campaign, thank you to anyone who makes a contribution, thank you for helping me make this dream come true.

I have a wide variety of perks available, but if you have an idea for something I could make for your contribution, email me and we’ll see what we can work out.  I am definitely open to suggestions! 🙂
