Thursday Thoughts: It’s a Wonderful Life

I had told you I would share the reflection paper I wrote for my Critical Thinking class as a Thanksgiving post, but I was so busy I didn’t have a chance to post it.  So it’s a week late, but I am still thankful for my wonderful life.

It’s a Wonderful Life

by Heather Dicianna

I have a wonderful life, and I don’t need an angel to show me just how wonderful it truly is, because I recognize it every day. In fact, I could say that I have many “angels” in my life, because I am surrounded by loving and supportive people who believe in me and encourage me to follow my dreams. Also, I get to spend each day doing what I love, being creative, and bringing new things to life. How wonderful is that?

By far my biggest supporter is my husband, Lorne. He tells me I’m beautiful, smart, talented, and strong. He brags about me and my accomplishments. He shares my blog posts about my business and encourages people to check out my website. He goes to events with me, helping me load and unload the car and set up the tables, and he keeps me company and mans the booth when I need a bathroom break. He reminds me constantly that he loves me, in both words and deeds. When I thank him for his support and for putting up with me, he looks baffled and says things like “I knew you were an artist when I married you.” I am truly grateful to have such an amazing man in my life, and I hope I am giving him just as much love and support as he gives me.

I have a handful of friends who continuously amaze me with their generosity. When I first moved to New Hampshire, I really only knew Lorne, but his friends quickly adopted me as one of their own. I felt like part of the “family” immediately, which is a testament to both their open-mindedness and their love for Lorne. If I made him happy, then I was okay in their book! But that really just opened the door, because I feel they love me for who I am as well, and not just because Lorne loves me. They have become my friends, too. Oh sure, they’ll still kill me if I ever hurt Lorne, but it will sadden them to have to do so!

I also have an incredible network of “online” friends from around the world, people I can chat with anytime, keep up with on Facebook, play games with, and occasionally meet in person. Some of these friends have stuck by me through some fairly dark times in my life, and gone out of their way to help me out when I needed it. Some offered me a place to stay when I had nowhere else to go, and kept me from being homeless or having to live in my car. Some stood up for me when others tried to bring me down. Some encourage their friends to check out my business. Some tune in to my radio show and let me know they’re listening, which is greatly appreciated. Always nice to know I’m not just talking to myself! It is absolutely untrue that online friends are not “real” friends. Even those I have yet to meet in person are still definitely real friends I truly care about.

Another group of wonderful people in my life includes my parental figures: my mother, my father, and my step-mother. My parents and I had some difficulties as I was growing up, but what kid hasn’t? I am grateful that they love me and encourage me to be who I am, rather than who they think I should be. They may not have always agreed with my decisions, but they always agreed they were my decisions to make. They give me unconditional love and support. Having all three of them travel from the other side of the country to attend my wedding in August was the perfect gift.

And it’s a wonderful life because I get to spend my days doing what I love. I am an artist and designer of handmade jewelry, clothing, accessories, and costume pieces. I “rescue” unwanted items and turn them into new treasures. I get to express my creativity and individualism, and help others express theirs. I also have the joy of creating custom orders, and seeing the excitement of someone who is getting exactly what they were looking for. I get to help them bring their vision to life. I may work 12-18 hour days for very little monetary return, but it’s a labor of love that I know will one day pay off.

I have a wonderful life, and I am grateful for everyone and everything that makes it so wonderful.

Five X Fifty: Day 12 – Tu-Tus

And now for something completely different…

I made a multi-color tu-tu petticoat to wear underneath my wedding dress, and I’ve been meaning to offer them in my Etsy shop.  Finally got around to making enough samples to do so!  They are available in three sizes: Mini, Regular, and Long, but can also be made to any length via a custom order.  But three is not five, and this is a Five X Fifty, so I made five different color combinations with two samples for each size, repeating the Rainbow combination for both the Mini and Long sizes because hey, rainbows!

And here’s a close up of the Long one I wore underneath my wedding dress:

Yes, I wore Converse under my wedding dress.  Outdoor wedding, uneven ground, standing in one spot for awhile… not an occasion where I wanted to wear heels!  And just because this is MY blog, how about another gratuitous wedding pic of me and my handsome husband?

*

Okay, now back to business!  A Mini Tu-Tu Tulle Skirt can be chosen as your free item for a $20 contribution to my IndieGoGo campaign, a Regular one can be chosen for a $30 contribution, and if you want a Long one, you might as well spend the extra $10 and go with the $50 contribution and use that $210 gift certificate, leaving you $170.05 still to spend.  So for $50 you could get 5 Long Tu-Tus and still have money left over!

And my apologies for getting the post out so much later than I had wanted… I took the wrong exit, then went the wrong direction, and in the process of turning around managed to completely lose my sense of direction so I ended up going the wrong way AGAIN!  I finally got on the right road going the right way, only to realize as I passed another exit that I probably should have gone that way instead, so I drove through town rather than going around on the highway.  Then I drove right past my destination, so I had to turn around yet again!  As I left there, I realized I should probably stop at that store that was in that same complex, so I ended up going out one exit and back in again the next.  I was doing better for awhile, but on the way home I drove right past the exit I should have taken, so I had to go up to the next one and back around again.  *sigh*  It’s been a “going around in circles” kind of day.

But tomorrow is a new day!  What surprises do you think it has in store for us?

Five X Fifty: Day 11 – Hockey

If you follow my personal Facebook status updates, you know that the craft fair I was at over the weekend was a disaster.  Badly organized, misrepresented, unadvertised… it was horrible.  And to top it off, two of my rings were stolen.  I am not a happy camper and am still simmering, so I’m going to just move along with the Five X Fifty posts before I go off on a rant.

Because we were told that they expected over 5000 people at this craft fair held during a hockey tournament, I stocked up on hockey stick and ice skate charms.  But I only sold a few, so I have plenty left to offer up in my Etsy shop.  So today’s Five X Fifty features earrings, necklaces, and wine charms with a hockey theme.

Let’s start with the wine charms, as even thinking about that craft fair makes me want some wine.  Oh wait, I wasn’t going to rant, was I?  So yes, back to the wine charms!  I can make these in any team colors, but because I live near Boston, I used the ones of the Boston Bruins for the samples.

The skates were the most popular, and I had one hockey mom come back the next day and show me that she was wearing the earrings I made for her and tell me how much she loved them.  That’s one plus from the event, I made at least a few people happy!

And of course there is a matching necklace…

I can put this on either a silver chain or a black cord necklace.  There’s also the hockey stick…

Two more craft fairs to go, and these should be a lot better.  One has been going on for over 20 years, and the other is at my housemate’s work, so she can advise me of what is most likely to sell there.  Got my fingers crossed, I really need to get some sales!

I also really need to get more contributions to my IndieGoGo campaign.  I am planning to put together a new video and update the entire thing, as I have been accepted as a merchant for Birka, and I need the supplies to launch my line of Practically Period jewelry, garb, and accessories.  As mentioned there, here are a few of my ideas:

  • Period “Replica” Jewelry – Designs based on portraits and artwork from the Middle Ages and Renaissance.
  • Basic garb – T-tunics, chemises, simple dresses, etc.
  • “Upcycled” garb – Modern clothing “rewondered” to look more period.
  • Garb “Accessories” – Sleeves that tie on, aprons, tabards, headdresses, hats, belts and sashes, pouches, corsets, etc.

I’ll still be working on my Five X Fifty posts, but the majority of my time after craft fair season is over will be spent stocking up for Birka.  If you’re planning to go, and contribute to my IndieGoGo campaign, you can pick your free item and spend your gift certificate there!  If you can’t go, have no idea what the SCA is, and just want to make a contribution to help ease the nightmare that was last weekend’s craft fair, that’s greatly appreciated too! 😀

I’ll have another Five X Fifty post for you later today, but I have a few errands I need to run and have to actually get out of my pajamas at some point, so I better go take care of that first…

Five X Fifty: Day 10 – Freaky Fleece Hats

I made all these hats today, and they turned out so awesome I just couldn’t wait to share them with you, so they’re moved up in the queue to be Day 10!

Winter is coming (already here in New England, if you ask me) and you’re going to need something to keep your head warm.  But why wear any old boring hat when you can have one of these?

You can show your punk rock attitude with this two-color mohawk hat!

And what do these monster hats remind you of?  Well, if you’re thinking along the same lines I am, then the answer is Muppets!  And what Muppet has crazy hair and a rock n roll attitude that is perfect for this hat style?  Animal!

I’m actually almost okay with it being so cold, just so I have an excuse to wear these.

And that’s Day 10!  I’m still ten days behind, but my husband will be using my laptop tonight to do his show for The Cape Radio, so I’ll just have to content myself with making more things instead.  Oh woe is me.

I have decided I’ll let you in on what I plan for Black Friday – Small Business Saturday – Cyber Monday, but that will be in a separate post, later tonight after the show.  Suffice it to say, if you can make a $50 contribution to my IndieGoGo campaign so you’ll have a $210 gift certificate to spend in my Etsy shop, you’re going to get a GREAT deal!  Even if you don’t have $50, your gift certificate for the amount of your contribution will go a lot further this weekend, and you still get to choose a free item!

I’ll explain more later, but I need to get offline soon, so I better hurry up and get this posted!

Five X Fifty: Day 9 – Snap Barrettes

I teased you with a possible Monday Musings today, but I’m afraid I’m not going to deliver.  My brain just isn’t on track for doing much reflection or writing, so it will have to wait a bit longer.  I will be sharing the reflection paper I wrote for my Critical Thinking class on Thursday, as it is about why I have a good life, and seems perfect for Thanksgiving.  And it was a comment on this paper that I was planning to address for a Thursday Thoughts or Monday Musings, so it makes sense to share the paper first.

Today I will deliver on a promise, however.  Remember when I said I was going to bring you more snap barrettes?  Well today is that day!  You know I’ve been eying this for awhile…

And there we have Day 9!  And today’s the 19th, so that means I’m only 10 days behind… oof.  I spent most of the day playing with glue, so when that dries I’ll have a few more for you.  I still have a couple of hours left to do some sewing, so that should finish up a few more.  Then there’s the photographing, the listing, the writing of the posts… whew!  But I’ll get it all done, eventually.  This week is probably my last big push to MAKE ALL THE THINGS for the craft fairs.  Unless I completely sell out of stuff this weekend (one can only hope!), I should have plenty of stuff for the last two, plus I have the Five X Fifty items I’m still adding as I go.

I am hoping to get several more things up in my Etsy shop  in the next couple of days, as I will be doing a Black Friday/Small Business Saturday/Cyber Monday promotion.  Details of that will be up on Friday morning before I head off to the Cornucopia Craft Fair.  If I might make a suggestion to REALLY take advantage of the special I’ll be offering Friday, November 23rd through Monday, November 26th: go make a contribution to my IndieGoGo campaign.  You’ll have a gift certificate to spend in my Etsy shop, plus you’ll be able to choose an item for free.  Or if you make a $50 contribution, you’ll have $210 to spend!  And if I manage to raise double my goal by Thanksgiving, you’ll have twice as much to spend over the weekend!  So be sure to tell all your friends, too!  Check out the FAQ about the rewards for my IndieGoGo campaign for more information.

Okay, the sewing machine is calling me to get back to work, so I had better snap to it!  😛

Five X Fifty: Wondiosyncra-Tees

You’ve already had a preview of this item, since I donated one to the Real World Hero charity auction (and you’ll see that one again below).  I call these “Wondiosyncra-Tees: Upcycled T-shirts celebrating the characteristics that make you wonderful.”  You choose the word or phrase (ten letters or less) that best describes you, and I cut those letters out of old t-shirts and create a frankentee with a ransom letter style.  I think they’re a lot of fun!

This is another custom made item, so all the links go to one listing in my Etsy shop.  But of course I have five examples for you, two of which someone can snap up as is instead of waiting for a custom made one.  First come, first served, though I can always create another one with the same word or phrase.  It will just look different, since no two of these shirts will ever be alike.

But first, the three you can’t have. 😛

I made one of these for myself to wear to craft fairs and events, so of course it says “Rewondered” on it.  I’m usually wearing a hoodie over it though, so you can only actually see the “wonder” part. 😛

I made one for my husband to wear to the shows he helps me with, too.  His nickname is “Random” and this style is perfect with it’s mish-mash of letters and colors.

And of course, there’s the one I made for the Real World Hero charity auction, which says “Hero” on it. Congratulations to the winner! I mailed it out this morning. 🙂

I wanted to add another color into the mix, so I made up this “Red Hot” one. It’s a size XL, and available to the first person who orders and claims it!

And finally, you know I had to make a “Geeky” one! This one is a 2XL, and also available to the first person who orders and claims it.

I meant to have more items up today, but I decided that the contributions I’ve received to my IndieGoGo campaign so far should be put to good use and I should take advantage of the really awesome sale that JoAnn Fabrics was having today. I picked up a ton of stuff on clearance, too! I was showing my husband my “loot” and telling him the ideas I was going to make with my purchases, and he mostly just smiled indulgently at me and nodded, with an occasional “ooh nifty!” I have him well-trained! 😛

Unfortunately, I won’t be able to take advantage of any Black Friday or weekend sales, since I’ll be at the Cornucopia Craft Fair selling my own stuff.  Though if sales/contributions and time allows, I may try and sneak in on Saturday and get the Dritz Dressform that will be on sale for $99.99, which would be immensely helpful for creating custom clothing.  We shall see.

For now, I am going to continue to be in MAKE ALL THE THINGS mode until Thanksgiving, and I’m seriously contemplating not taking the holiday off and spending it sewing instead.  I know, I know, all work and no play and all that.  But I’m 3000 miles away from my family, and my husband’s family is 1500 miles away.  We’ve been invited to dinner with our housemate’s family, but being away from my studio all day, knowing I have to be up at 5 or 6am the next day for a 3-day show that anticipates 5000 people coming through… eep!  Again, we shall see.  I suppose it really depends on what all I get done by Wednesday.  So I better get back to it, methinks! 🙂

Five X Fifty: Day 7 – Beribboned Banana Clips

It’s Thursday, and I was going to do a Thursday Thoughts for you, but I have homework looming over me that’s due tomorrow, so perhaps I’ll save that subject for a Monday Musings instead.  Ooh, a mystery!  Whatever could that subject be?  I guess you’ll just have to tune in Monday to find out!

For now, we will get on with Day 7 and my Beribboned Banana Clips.  These are so pretty with the ribbons cascading through your hair!  I need to get either a model or a photographer for some pictures of how it looks when worn.  For now though, you just get to see them hanging on my wall.

This is an item that can be custom ordered in any color combination, so I only have one listing up in my Etsy shop, with variations you can choose from or you can make up your own color combination.  But I have five options as samples to show you.

I offer team/bulk discounts: if you want 5 or more, they’ll be $12 each, if you want 10 or more they will be $10 each. Please message me to set up a custom listing for team/bulk orders.

You can choose one of these as your free item when you make a $15 contribution to my IndieGoGo campaign.  Huge thanks to those who have already contributed and shared the campaign links!  Y’all are awesome!!  (Yes, I say “y’all” and I’m from Oregon and live in New Hampshire.  I’m strange.  Deal with it.)

Alas, I must get back to the homework for now.  I hope to get a bit more caught up with these Five X Fifty posts over the weekend, as I don’t have any plans to leave my house.  My husband is very much looking forward to sleeping in on a Saturday again! 😛  Have I mentioned lately how lucky I am to have such a wonderful, supportive husband?  I really think I am the luckiest girl in the world to have him in my life!  And I’m not just saying that because I know he reads my blog. 😉

Okay, okay, enough with the mushy, must do homework… arrrgh!!

Five X Fifty: Day 6 – Wine Charms

So the answer to yesterday’s question of if I could get this post ready before my husband came home and took over my computer was “no.” 😛

But that’s okay, today is a beautiful day and I am enjoying the sunshine streaming through my studio windows.  Later, I will walk over to the post office and pick up a package which includes some supplies I ordered.  And now, I will get on with posting Day 6 and these adorable Wine Charm Sets I made!

I am also happy to custom make these in any theme or color combination in sets of four, six, eight, ten, or twelve.

Yay!  Day 6 is done!

Before I run off and work on Day 7 and the homework that is due on Friday, let me give you a quick update on my IndieGoGo campaign.  There are 47 days left and I’ve raised 10% of my goal.  If you browse the campaigns under the Fashion category, I’m on the third page there!  Just need to get my gogofactor up some more so I can get to the first page, and if I’m really lucky, get featured by IndieGoGo, or at least show up in the Popular category somewhere.  If you would be so kind as to share my campaign, I’d really appreciate it!  For more ways you can help my gogofactor increase, see this post.

You may have noticed that the items I’ve been posting are small and inexpensive.  That’s because these are the supplies I already have on hand.  In order to make up at least five samples of some of my larger and more expensive products, I need more money for supplies, and that’s where my IndieGoGo campaign comes in.  I can do the entire Five X Fifty in small items, but if you want to see something really neat, please make a contribution!  🙂

Okay, shameless plug time over, now I really must get back to work!  😀

Five X Fifty: Day 5 – Single Bead Dangle Earrings

Having a bit of a slow start to my day today, as I took the glow sticks away from the squirrels (I’ve been told my alarm sounds like squirrels at a rave) and turned over and went back to sleep for another two and a half hours.  Looks like it’s time to turn on the secondary alarms again.  Winter is in full swing, despite the gorgeous day yesterday, and the forecast is calling for highs in the low- to mid-forties for the next ten days.  So I must fight my natural tendency to hibernate and tell my Seasonal Affective Disorder to stuff it, I’ve got work to do!

Luckily, I actually got Day 5’s items up in my Etsy shop last night, so this won’t take as long as it normally does.  If you’ve perused my shop since last night or checked out the Gallery of my IndieGoGo campaign, you’ve already seen these fun earrings.  It’s hard to pick my favorite of the five, but knowing my penchant for stars and my punk/rock fairy princess style, you’re probably not surprised if I claim these black star earrings as the best:

I am also just totally in love with the idea of these blue eye earrings.  They’d make an awesome addition to a monster costume, or just wear them to make people do a double take.  “Wait a minute, are those EYES dangling from your ears???”

These copper-colored rose beads are just so pretty.  I think they’d add a nice feminine touch to a Steampunk costume.

These silver discs remind me of suns in ancient Aztec or Mayan art.

And finally, these elegant little pearly white teardrops would be excellent for a wedding, and would even work for a “period” costume.  While not perfectly period, they are what I call “Practically Period” – they offer a similar look, but use more “practical” materials and methods of production, and are therefore at a much more “practical” price than an exact replica.  This is a line I’m definitely going to be adding to, so stay tuned!

And that’s Day 5!  I’m slowly catching up.  If you missed any of the first four days, here’s the links:

I need to photograph the Day 6 items, and hope to get those posted before my husband comes home to take over my laptop for his show on The Cape Radio.  I also need to run to the post office today and mail the items that sold online over the weekend, since I wasn’t able to mail anything yesterday.  And then get back to the other ten billion items on my Massive To Do List™!  Including making more of the items for this Five X Fifty promotion. 🙂

What items are you hoping to see come out in the next 45 days?  There’s a list of some of my ideas on my IndieGoGo campaign page, which of those are you most looking forward to?  And what kinds of things do you wish someone would make?

Five X Fifty: Day 4 – Button Rings

It’s Monday, and time to get back to work!  Which is somewhat laughable when I realize I was up at 4am on Saturday to finish getting ready for the craft fair, spent all day there, and got home around 8pm.  Most of Sunday was spent putting things up on eBay to take advantage of a free listing event.  As I said, no rest for the wicked, and I am definitely on Santa’s naughty list this year!

Which means I’ll have to look elsewhere to get what I want for Christmas.  Though really, the only thing I want is for my business to be successful.  So if you want to get a gift for me, why not buy one of my items as a gift for someone else?  And hey, you’d cross two people off your gift list at once!  Awesome!  Of course, you can also contribute to my IndieGoGo campaign, which could actually equal at least three gifts… see, I’m here to help! 😛

Yeah, yeah, I know, it’s not even Thanksgiving yet, and here I am talking about Christmas shopping.  Sorry.  So instead, let’s talk about Button Rings, which is the subject of this post anyway, if the headline is anything to go by!

As I mentioned, I have a massive button collection that really needed to be pared down, so I have several new products that involve buttons.  These ones have been made into rings with adjustable bands, so they can fit just about anyone.  They are a cute novelty item, and I’ve got quite a few of them, as you can see here:

These are available at the craft fairs, but I’ve put five up exclusively on Etsy.  To go with the bat pin and bat snap barrettes, there’s this ring:

Black Bat Ring with Adjustable Band by Rewondered D225R-00002 - $4.95

Like black, but not into bats?  This is a nice round black button, with three grooved stripes:

Perhaps you’re looking for something a bit more “bling”?  The pictures really don’t convey the metallic undertone of this ring:

Yay!  Day Four is done!  I’ll get caught up with these yet!  Stay tuned for Day 5, where I’ll introduce more earrings…
